“Like a mirror of each other”
Choreographer Damien Jalet on his Instagram takes us through the creative process behind Frozen – one of the highlights of the Madame X Tour – in the form of a pas de deux between Madonna and her daughter, the dancer Lola Leon.
The choreographic score of Madonna is an hommage to one of her her artistic mother: Martha Graham, Jalet explains; they worked separately with Lola Leon on a solo based on the idea of shape shifting.
Through the song Lola evolves from a close, inward static position to free, twirling movements around her mother, like an energy coming out of her, finding freedom and emancipation though her moves.
Madonna was studying modern dance at the current age of Lola. The two in some moments are like a mirror of each other.
Lola appears on film, shot by Luigi and Iango. and projected on a screen that instead of being a backdrop is positioned in front of the stage space. Madonna dances in the darked out stage, carefully lighted so that she can be seen through the screen and her image and Lola’s melt together.
Both Madonna’s and Lola’s solos were created by Damien Jalet with the assisting help of Aimilios Arapoglou and Sierra Herrera.
