“Most of all, thank you Prince Rogers Nelson for all that you’ve given us”
Madonna was joined by music legend Stevie Wonder to pay homage to the late Prince Rogers Nelson at the Billboard Music Awards 2016 in Las Vegas last night.
The tribute started with a speech by Questlove, drummer of the Roots and musical director of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, who is a lifelong Prince expert. fan, expert and occasional collaborator.
All of us live in the land of music, and his departure from it was an earthquake – every time we hear a scream [squeak]… every time we see a yellow suit with the rear cut out…
Then the spoken intro to Prince‘s Let’s Go Crazy was played, the T-Mobile arena turned purple and a shiny throne with its back to the audience was revealed, then slowly turned around to let Madonna, who was wearing a custom made Gucci suit, kick off the musical tribute with a beautiful rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U while videos and photos of Prince projected behind her.
Then Stevie Wonder, wearing a purple scarf around his neck joined her for a Purple Rain coda to which the audience at the arena in Las Vegas sang along.
At the end of the performance Stevie thanked Madonna, Madonna thanked Stevie and said:
Most of all, thank you Prince Rogers Nelson for all that you’ve given us.
Thanks to Lighthouse Mike.
