Roberta’s ”Susan” jacket fetches $252,000
MadonnaTribe’s friend and contributor Ben did just a little bit more research about the Desperately Seeking Susan jacket auctioned by Julien’s last week.
As Ben pointed out in his first report the jacket that went under the hammer was basically the one worn by Rosanna Arquette in the movie scenes, although Madonna and Rosanna’s jackets traded places a few times.
Madonna did indeed wear Rosanna’s jacket in the Polaroid photo, and as our reader Francesco found out, Rosanna wore Madonna’s jacket in one of the Battery Park scenes.
“That scene with Rosanna wearing Madonna’s jacket is funny”, Ben adds to this intriguing story. “When Rosanna arrives at Battery Park she is wearing her own jacket. But when she gets knocked out and loses her memory she is suddenly wearing Madonna’s jacket. But only for that part of the scene. The rest of the movie she is wearing her own.”
“I know some people think it’s a bit crazy studying the film like this. But if someone is about to pay $50,000 for a jacket it’s interesting for them to know how it was actually used in the film,” Ben also added.
Well, in the end the jacket went for a lot more than that at Julien’s Auctions. The Desperately Seeking Susan jacket fetched $252,000 – becoming the highest priced lot in this year’s Icons & Idols: Rock ‘n’ Roll event.
Overall the Madonna items raised $3.2m, with the gown from the “Material Girl” video reaching $73,125 and the dress from her wedding to Sean Penn in 1985 selling for $81,250 (£51,192). The “Who’s That Girl Tour” costume closed at $50,000, the earring worn in “Susan” at $34,375, the “A League of Their Own” uniform at $31,250 and the gown from “Evita” at $15,000.
Good going stranger, or maybe not.
